This is a space for free-form writing about jazz history.
The main focus of my research is the jazz avant-garde, from the 1960s New York scene to subsequent incarnations elsewhere, from Cleveland to Paris.
Musicians I have written about include Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, the Black Unity Trio, François Tusques, among many others. I have researched topics ranging from the history of musician-owned labels, to BYG Records’s Actuel series, to Hanns Eisler’s fighting songs.
Outlets I have contributed to include The Wire, New York City Jazz Record, Point of Departure, Chimurenga Chronic, We Jazz, and Current Research in Jazz.
